Origin Displayed: Spanish Spelling variations include: Aguilar, Aguilera, Aguiler, Aguiar, Aquilar and others. First found in Castile, predominant among the Christian kingdoms of medieval Spain. Some of the first settlers of this name or some of its variants were: Among the early explorers of the New World was Jer?nimo de Aguilar, who reached the coast of Mexico in 1511 and lived for eight years among the Mayas, before joining Cort?s in 1519 in the conquest of Mexico. Other early settlers of the New World include Catalina de Aguiar, who emigrated to America in 1512.
