First found in the district of Galloway in south western Scotland, from very ancient times. Some of the first settlers of this name or some of its variants were: Andrew Agnew settled in New England in 1718; another Andrew settled in New Hampshire in 1718; Alexander settled in New York in 1774; and another Alexander in New Castle Delaware in 1789.
